Woodworking is a creative act.
Woodworking brings one back to earth.

Woodworking was always my dream.
For some years now I have lived it

as a hobby.

Woodworking requires
wood, brains and devotion,
humility and discipline,
precision, patience and retention,
creativity, concentration and skills,
knowledge and tools,
a lot of love, attention and diligence.

Woodworking is dirty and dusty,
toxic and dangerous

yet at the same time it is

one of the noblest, most ecological
and most sustainable activities that exist.

Martin Gerhards

About me, this website and other stuff:

Many with whom I chatted a bit about my page thought I was some kind of a web designer; but I am not. I advise companies and managers on issues related to their business organization; most often leading organizational projects and on occasion overseeing software projects.

As a consultant, it is imperative that my “spiritual outpourings” are succinct, lucid and to the point. Therefore, I inevitably must often concern myself with software issues. I have an understanding of software as it pertains to my profession, but it is not my passion.

My relationship with software reminds me a little bit of a movie starring Tom Selleck, alias “Quigley”. A rogue Australian rancher, Marston, has heard of Quigley’s reputation as a well-known long range shooter, and allegedly hires him to kill dingoes to save his sheep herd. But in fact, the villain, Marston, wants Quigley to kill Aborigines. Marston and the Aborigines do not see eye to eye on the concept of “ownership”; an idea completely foreign in the Aborigine culture.

Marston, tired of losing an occasional sheep to the Aborigine wants this thievery stopped. Quigley, wanting no part of Marston’s plan, flees the ranch. Of course it comes to a showdown after Quigley has fled and been caught a second time. Marston, an Australian gunslinger, proposes a duel to settle things between them. Marston, wanting to stack the deck in his own favor, thinking Quigley is familiar only with long rifles, offers him a Colt revolver as his dueling weapon. As the villain lay dying in the dust, Quigley remarks, “I said I never had much use for one. Never said I didn’t know how to use it.”

Software for me is like that. It is not my passion, but I know how to use it.

I came to woodworking because my job (which I - not to be misunderstood - love in minimum as much as woodworking) has unfortunately very often "less grip" and I was always incredibly fascinated by wood. It is probably not uncommon, if you look at the mid-forties how life could have been run also, and my theoretical answer is: As a carpenter. Only in theory, of course, because when I talk with real carpenters the practice seems to me not that romantic.

I built this page, because I was able to. And because my own start with woodworking cost me immense effort and a lot of wasted money. With my sites I want to make it funny and easier for woodworking-beginners. Besides I considered that the woodworkers community is from incredibly kind people and only that is reason enough to belong to it.

When I should be able to inspire someone for woodworking with my site, who is still in doubt whether he would rather choose "rafting" or "collecting coffee grinders" as hobby, then I've done something for all highly respected tool makers and providers of fine tools, but also for the interested by saving a lot of money, if they buy the right tools from the very begin. Therefore, I ask all providers, to leave the competition rest on my page, because every n e w woodworker creates advantages for all of them.

My very special thank goes to Nancy Andersen. Nancy is the owner of Londonderry Brasses. She is really helping me with the translation.
